I Know…
willing to engage in conversation to pass the time in line. It was the guy wearing the unbelievable holiday sweater who caught my eye and then my ear. He was pontificating, to anyone who would listen, on his knowledge of domestic and international politics and his disgruntlement with recent cabinet selections. A demure woman commented about how worldly his knowledge was and that obviously he had traveled extensively. To her surprise, he told her he had never been outside of the state.
Electoral Sports

After this election, as many are thinking about dumping the Electoral College, we should reassess and change how the victor of our favorite sports are declared. If we are willing to accept the nation’s highest office be determined by the major population centers, the states of New York and California, and a few counties in Florida; then we should be demanding a change in sports as well.
We shouldn’t accept football scores as the way to determine the winner. The victor should be based on total yardage. After all it’s more exciting to see a lot of offense, and who really cares about those few yards in the Red Zone. Winners in basketball and hockey, well of course, should be based on shots on goal. Counting if they made their mark is silly, just keep shooting that’s what’s fun. Baseball, clearly should be based on the the number of hits. After all, getting a hit is the hardest thing to do in sports. Tennis, well surely, most hits on ball; because what the hell is a love game anyway? And my favorite, being a fiscal conservative social liberal; golf. With the cost of green fees; without question, golf should be based on number of swings. It’s silly to win with the lowest number of strokes. After all, I get more swings per buck than anyone I know. And my passion, triathlons; well, just finish, uninjured, and you’re a winner.
The presidential race, well, it wasn’t as close as it might seem. Ok; one candidate, did get more individual votes. Maybe about 1% of all votes cast. Let’s look a little deeper. The ultimate winner won 31 states to 19; a 62% win margin. On the Electoral College front, needing 270 votes, one received 306 the other 228; a 57% win margin. Geographically, by county results, the winner took over 80%. There aren’t many ways one can make the outcome any different and still be representative.
But hey, I’m gonna continue to lobby for my swings per buck trophy and just keep finishing those tri’s.

Stuck in a Jam….
I paused on an overpass viewing the highway traffic coming and going. When I noticed a few on the right had made poor choices resulting in an unfortunate altercation. The right lanes almost immediately came to a halt as their sudden loss of momentum caused subsequent accidents. Backing up and in the ditch, the masses stymied and stopped by those decisions. It’s hard to tell if it’s a major accident or a series of minor incidents, nevertheless traffic stacked up. Silhouettes…..

What’s Right…?
It’s all in your perspective, and yours to control. Every day we hear someone ask “what’s wrong” or, comment “what’s wrong is…”. But how many times do you hear, or more importantly think, ‘What’s, right…”? It’s engrained in us to look for and expect the negative; but, why? From my perspective, there’s a lot which should and could be changed. From someone else’s, maybe not so much, or not at all. Therein lies the conundrum and the opportunity.
Every day is filled with infinite opportunities to ask, and answer, ‘what’s right’. It’s within your control to do so. It’s up to you how you react to comments and actions. Your reactions are not the responsibility of the tormentor; they are yours and yours to control. Focus, find something you enjoy in every situation, and enjoy the hell out of it. Everything else associated with a pretty poor situation can be managed. Managed, not condoned or tolerated; but, accepted for what it is, not how you’re going to react. If you can’t think through the situation, you’ve stopped thinking and are now just emotional and reactionary. You’ve lost control and yielded to that which is your very torment.
Start with what’s right with you. If you don’t get any further, that’s ok, you don’t need to. Knowing what’s right with you will get you through a lot. A lot more than you can imagine. Accept yourself. It’s who you are; not necessarily who you want to be. But, today, at this moment, it’s who you are. Recognize those ‘rights’ and use the strengths to your advantage as you move forward. If you focus on what’s wrong, everything you encounter will only reinforce the ‘wrong’. Stop asking the wrong question.
What’s, right? I’d say you are, and today is another day to excel.
Don’t Vote……
Every election, every opportunity to vote, is important. The health of our representative republic is at risk with every election. It isn’t your civic responsibility to vote, it’s a privilege and one which shouldn’t be abused. Our country is based on the principle of an electorate selecting people who best represent their opinions and aspirations. Those representatives are then empowered to make laws in concert with the majority of their constituents, while protecting the rights of the minority.
The burgeoning practice of ballot initiatives, while seeming more ‘democratic’, is actioned to circumvent the representative government and intentionally empower an uninformed, reactionary, electorate. A democracy only works if the electorate are educated, involved, fully informed, and capable of weighing all options in making competent decisions.
Today, the ballots are argued in 30 second sound bites throughout all forms of media. Salted with just enough truth to be plausible and ample emotion to stir the voters. This yields a confused, uninformed, and misinformed voter population incapable of articulating the complex aspects of ballot measures. The final result, the high probability of really bad law and long term, unforeseen, impacts.
Choosing to support and vote for your favorite candidate is one thing. That vote can be corrected in the next election. An uninformed vote on any ballot measure is an emotionally driven, ignorant vote.
Become involved and informed. Don’t believe your friends and neighbors, and especially don’t believe the media broadcasts. There’s no excuse for you not to do the research and become an informed voter. But, if you don’t have all the facts, it’s your civic responsibility not to vote……..
Seriously….
Ok, as a lot of you know we’ve recently moved and that means the indignation of having to review and retake the new state’s driving test.
I’m really ok with it because laws for different areas need to be known. After all, who knew I had to know the hand signals for a horseback rider sharing the road.
But seriously, I’m 59, half deaf, half blind and have been wearing bi-focals for almost 20 years; and guess what, I can see well enough to pass the vision test without glasses…..Seriously…Now, I’m really scared about the other drivers and that dang cowboy….good grief…
9/12 revisited
There is a significant difference between, ‘taking a knee’, and raising a clinched fist…..
Spirit of 9/12….
Fifteen years ago we, collectively and individually, took a knee to pray, in our own way, for those we lost, their families, the country, and the world. We raised our flag and our heads showing the world, and ourselves, we were united and strong.
Fifteen years later, where’s the Spirit of 9/12? Our politicians, “leaders”, and the media have artfully categorized and sub-categorized us, driven wedges between us, all for their benefit; not ours. With their help and guidance, we slide down the slippery slope of judging all by the actions of a small few. We no longer seek common ground, only ground to defend.
Our country was founded and is strengthened by our diversity. Our diversity allows us to accept and grow uniquely in the world. We should, readily and openly, acknowledge the problems and injustices which exist. Not to let them define who we are; but, to use them and solve them. Strengthen our resolve to become better individuals and a better nation. Be responsible and accountable for your actions and reactions. Do not let circumstances or others dictate your response.
We watch people today taking a knee to acknowledge and highlight injustice and their hope for tomorrow; but, a knee is a lot better than a rock. Remember, fifteen years ago we all took a knee. Judge less, accept and respect more. Consider; you might be in the minority and yet, you still want your voice heard and your position understood. Our future is as bright as we allow it to be; because, we are stronger together than divided. We showed that fifteen years ago…
Let the Spirit of 9/12 be our guide, and Never Forget….
Never Fear the Dream…….
