Progress, unlike decline, is slow and arduous. It takes a lot to continue the effort when so few gains or rewards are experienced. No one achieved anything worthwhile in a single act but in the accumulation of constant mundane effort in their pursuit. Decline is easy and natural. Our bodies wither without exercising, and our minds atrophy from lack of challenge if we all live with familiar ideas and concepts. The decline is a steep slope most cannot recover from without even more effort. Constant challenge, even if upsetting, is a better alternative.
